THE VAINEST OF
THEM ALL?
Russia The former Soviet state
is the world's vainest country,
according to a poll by camera makers
Nikon. The nation’s proud inhabitants
post more photos of themselves online
than any other European nation. In fact,
34.2% of Russians like to upload their
pictures for the world to see. We Brits
are only slightly more reserved, with 33%
of us daring broadcast our drunken
escapades. All credit to the modest
Austrians, though, as only 24.9% of them
want you to know how they spent their
weekends. Online photo sharing is
generating new web etiquette, too, with a
sixth of us asking friends to remove
photos we don't like and some even
insisting on approving images first.
Presumably to do some Photoshopping…

TO MASS NUPTIALS
Singapore Planning a wedding
breeds stress: warring in-laws,
80 types of sponge cake to choose
from and disgruntled bridesmaids
dressed in peach. Presumably that’s
why 168 couples in Singapore opted to
ditch the typical wedding pandemonium
and get married all in the same
afternoon, in Singapore’s beautiful
Botanical Gardens. In celebration of its
150th anniversary, the famous setting
opened up its garden for the day
and charged blushing brides £125
for 15-minute ceremonies. There was
limited room for wedding entourage,
but grandparents and parents were
allowed to come along and watch.

FANCY A SPOT
OF NUDE HIKING?
Dankerode, Germany Careful
where you pitch your picnic
next time you’re holidaying in Germany
– an official 11-mile hiking path for naked
backpackers has just been unveiled.
Heinz Ludwig, the organiser of the route
through the Harz mountains in the north
of the country, claims that naked hikers
experience a sensual buzz from their
surroundings. “It’s a special communion
with the awakening seasons,” he says.
The path will open officially on 1 May
2010 and will begin at Ludwig’s campsite
in the village of Dankerode. “Naked
hiking in the fresh and healthy air, when
the weather is good, is an experience
that many people just don’t want to miss
out on,” said Kurt Fischer, of the German
Society of Nudists. “Everyone should
give it a go.” Might want to pack some
extra sunscreen and watch out for those
pesky nettles, though.

DOUBLE THE JOY
Maryland, US A pregnant
woman amazed medical staff
last month after a routine ultrasound
scan revealed that she was expecting
two babies that had been conceived
at different times. Julia Grovenburg,
31, of Arkansas in the US, was stunned
to learn that her case had occurred
thanks to a rare process called
superfetation. Her first baby is a girl,
due in December, while the second
child, a boy, is due in January, although
doctors have advised that both will
probably have to be delivered early.
Dr Karen
Boyle, of
the Greater
Baltimore
Medical
Centre,
explained:
“The second
conception
usually happens
up to 24 days
later than the
first, putting
the second
baby at risk of
lung development
problems.” She
added that
fortunately, the
two-week gap
between the
Grovenburg babies
would not put either
at much of a risk.
Only ten other
such cases
have ever been
recorded.

Los Angeles, US Unsurprisingly,
La La Land has spawned the
latest ‘wacky’ dating trend. Soulgeek.com
is a new site aimed specifically at girls
who have a passion for comic books and
video games. Well, who doesn’t? Dubbed
‘Soul Geeks’, they know their lightsabers
from their phasers and have unrivalled
scores on Dungeons And Dragons. And
the site's success (it has 17,000 members
and counting) shows that love really is all
around, even from galaxies far, far away.
‘Brainsmith’ and ‘Labrat’ write on the
homepage: “Without Soulgeek, we'd have
never met. The match is so perfect we’ve
crossed the miles that were between us.”
It's love, Jim, but not as we know it.

FILM FANS TO
VIEW ICE SCREEN
Stockholm, Sweden Visitors
to Stockholm International Film
Festival had better wrap up warm. The
newest feature to celebrate the festival’s
20th anniversary will be a full-sized
cinema screen made entirely of ice.
The giant screen, weighing around
10 metric tonnes, will be crafted from
ultra-clear ice harvested in slabs from
a frozen riverbed in northernmost
Sweden, near the Arctic circle. “We
wanted to do something spectacular
that has never been done before," said
Emelie Klein, spokesman for the festival.
"It will be the first time a feature film is
shown on an ice screen." The £44,700
creation will show two classic films
(might we suggest Ice Age?), which
will be revealed closer to the start
of the festival, which runs from 18 to
28 November. The screen will be
unveiled on 21 November.
