NEXT BIG THING: CASEY MULLIGAN
WITH LEADING MAN PETER SARSGAARD
IN UPCOMING BRIT FLICK AN EDUCATION
FILM
Hot new actress shines
in romantic Brit flick
For someone who’s already shared the
screen with Keira Knightley and Johnny
Depp, and romanced Megan Fox-magnet
Shia LaBeouf, you really should know the
name Carey Mulligan. And soon, you will.
No longer able to keep her talent
under the radar, the 24-year-old actress
from Surrey is bracing herself for the red-
carpet treatment as she leads an all-star
cast (Peter Sarsgaard , Emma Thompson,
Dominic Cooper and Rosamund Pike)
in new Brit-flick An Education, out this
month. Carey’s performance should put

her on the speed dial of every director
in Hollywood. The film, adapted for the
screen by author Nick Hornby, tells the
story of 16-year-old Jenny in a coming-ofage
tale set in the Sixties. Jenny, a
character based on Lynn Barber's
memoirs, is on the brink of womanhood,
dreaming of life outside suburbia.
Carey is startlingly good as the teenage
lead, but, despite the buzz, she is still
refreshingly grounded and says she’s
nervous about how her first leading role
will be received: “I never thought about it
until just before its premiere at Sundance.
I started worrying that if everybody hated
it, it would be my fault.”
She shouldn't lose sleep; she has three
new films out in 2010 – Wall Street 2:
Money Never Sleeps, which she's filming in
New York with Shia LaBeouf, as well as
Brothers with Natalie Portman and Brighton
Rock with Sam Riley in post-production.
Watch this face; it’s going A-List.
An Education is in cinemas nationwide
from 30 October
