WINTER FASHIONS DO
NOT NECESSARILY HAVE
TO ALL BE WORN AT ONCE
romances
considering British office workers
spend an average of 1,332 hours a year
chained to their desks, it’s no surprise
that 52% of people turn to colleagues
for romance, according to a survey by
office Angels. But close encounters of
the co-worker kind could soon be a thing
of the past. Up to 10% of UK companies
are believed to have guidelines on office
relations and appropriate behaviour.
so-called ‘love contracts’ are common
in Us offices and breaking them can
even be a cause for dismissal. How
would you feel about being told who
you could and couldn’t fall in love with?
two women battle it out.

Winter fashion gets
a Victoriana twist
Forget your bog-standard scarf or
plain old pea coat – this season,
we’ll be relying on Victorian winter
essentials in the form of cape coats
and snoods.
celebrities have been quick to jump
on the trend. Victoria Beckham was
recently seen flying through the airport
in a Niccolo cape coat from her own
collection and sienna Miller has
frequently been spotted in her little
“We’re adults; we don’t
need ‘love contracts’”
says Lucy Foster, 29,
News Editor, ShortList
“i’ve been with my partner for three
years and we’ve worked together for
the last two. Not once has it interfered
with my job. i know i’m capable and
certainly don’t want my dirty laundry
wafting around my colleagues’ ears.
‘love contracts’ are unnecessary. Most
career-minded adults can modify their
behaviour at work; i can manage 12
hours at work without grappling with
my boyfriend under a desk.”
Red Riding Hood-inspired version.
But the snood is also making a
comeback this season. For those who
don’t remember them from the Eighties,
a snood is a snuggly, cocoon-like tube
worn as a scarf-cum-hat. imagine a
balaclava without a face! championed
by Missoni and Burberry and picked up
on the high street by Marks & spencer
and H&M, snoods will be on everyone’s
heads this christmas. we like.

“Office relationships
are inappropriate”
says Lydia Curtis, 26,
PR Executive
“i saw an office relationship crash and
burn at my previous job. it made the
atmosphere tense. i know they don’t all
end that way, but i also appreciate the
boss’s perspective in wanting to keep
the office strictly work-related. Many
couples meet at work, so proposals to
ban them altogether are extreme. But
guidelines on behaviour are needed.
i don’t want to see my co-workers
frolicking around the photocopier!”

Burberry, £175
“THIS ANNUAL APPRAISAL
IS GOING FAR BETTER
THAN I PREDICTED”
