NO MAKE-UP FOR
SWIMMERS
Japan Professional
swimmers are being forced
to go au naturale thanks to new
regulations. Hair dye, nail varnish and
earrings have all been banned under
Japan’s Swimming Federation’s new
charter, which aims to stress the
seriousness of the sport. Officials
are anxious that, following recent
drug-use allegations, competitors
are becoming slack. Offenders face
being booted off the team and a
suspension of up to five years or
even a lifetime ban if they fail to
comply. And swimmers can say
goodbye to any frisky fun at training
camp, where men and women are
banned from each other’s quarters.
So that’s where the fun police have
been hiding.

SWEET, SWEET
FRANCE
France It’s not always
easy to keep positive in
such gloomy times and clearly
President Sarcozy feels a bout of
encouragement is in order. He is
urging his countrymen to start singing
a famous song of French patriotism
loud and proud. La Douce France
(Sweet France) was written by
Charles Trenet in 1943 to keep
chins up during the Second World
War when the country was occupied
by Germany. The President is
encouraging its renaissance in a
bid to bond the nation, and force
the government and men and women
of France to defend their culture
with La Douce France “at a time
when globalisation erases a little
more of the characteristics of
each nation.”

THE BODY OF MISSING
AVIATOR AMELIA EARHART
HAS NEVER BEEN RECOVERED
EARHART’S HAIR “A A
PIECE OF THREAD” ”
US For years people have
pondered the disappearance e
of aviator Amelia Earhart. A piece of f
her hair has even been exhibited at
the International Women’s Air and
Space Museum in Cleveland, Ohio,
since 1986. But, rather embarrassingly, ly,
a group of historians have analysed
the hair and found that it’s actually
a piece of thread. Oh dear. Earhart
disappeared over the Pacific in 1937
while attempting a solo flight around d
the world. Shortly before, she stayed d
at the White House where a maid
recovered the ‘hair’. It was given to
the Smithsonian Institution who later r
donated it to the Cleveland museum. m.
Someone somewhere must be feeling ng
rather foolish.

FIRST LADY LOVES
STONEWASH
Japan Denim manufacturer,
Japan Jeans Association, has
awarded Japan’s First Lady, Miyuki
Hatoyama, 66, its annual prize for
celebrities who look hot in denim.
Along with four
Japanese musicians
and a Taiwanese
actor, Hatoyama
was applauded for
“wearing jeans
gracefully, with
a revolutionary
touch”. The
First Lady
was
evidently
touched,
saying: “I
have long
wished to win
the prize, as
I’m a big fan
of jeans.” The
former actress
and wife of
Prime Minister
Yukio Hatoyama
is known for her
eccentricities,
previously
claiming that
her soul travelled
on a UFO. Whatever
her beliefs, you
can’t knock her
ability to carry off
stonewash denim.

POLITICIAN DEBRA
BOWEN IS ANTI-DIVORCE
CALIFORNIA TO
BAN DIVORCES?
US A female politician has
encouraged a campaign to
ban divorces in California. Debra
Bowen, California’s secretary of state,
has authorised a writer named John
Marcotte to proceed with his
campaign to eliminate divorce cases.
Under US law everyone has the right
to petition and Marcotte now has
until 22 March 2010 to collect
694,354 signatures of registered
voters in order to get the measure on
the ballot next year. Couples could
still get their marriages annulled
under the proposal, but divorces
would be banned altogether. The
initiative argues that the proposal will
save the state hundreds of millions of
dollars annually in costly court cases.
