life’s challenges
Letter To My Daughter by Maya Angelou,
out 5 Nov, Random House, £12.99 Learning
lessons in life is invaluable, especially if it’s
wise words from your mother. But as
teenagers never want to listen to their
mothers, most people make mistakes instead
of heeding their wise words. Nodding in
assent? Then Letter To My Daughter, the latest
book from the grand dame of memoirs Maya
Angelou, is definitely one for your reading list.
Author of the uplifting autobiography I Know
Why The Caged Bird Sings, her acclaimed
1969 coming-of-age tale, Angelou is famous for
demonstrating the tenacity of her human spirit
– and this is just as emotive. Presented as letters
to the daughter she never had, it’s packed with
insight on how to overcome the challenges of our
world. Based on experiences from Angelou’s life,

including some harrowing abuse (as a young
child she was raped by her mother’s boyfriend),
sensitive topics are buttressed with humour and
tactility. The perfect gift to give to someone you
care for if you can’t quite find the words.

A gangster film with Johnny Depp
would always raise expectations
– and this lives up to them. A
brooding Depp brings to life a
sagging storyline as John Dillinger,
a charming mobster eluding an FBI
agent (Christian Bale) in Thirties
Chicago. One to watch again.
MUSIC
REALITY KILLED THE VIDEO
STAR BY ROBBIE WILLIAMS
Out 9 Nov, £8.98 After the
experimentation of Rudebox, Reality
is a welcome return to Williams’s
earlier solo stuff (powerful vocals
and, mercifully, less rapping), but with a more mature twist.
Morning Sun is almost hymn-like and Won’t Do That is
probably his first original love song since Angels. Definitely
a grower: Robbie fans won’t be disappointed.
