If you were to close your eyes and
picture a paradise island, chances are
it would look exactly like Mauritius.
This piece of undisturbed east Africa
(and one of the biggest islands in the
area) is one large slice of spa and
cocktail-soaked luxury.
Arriving at a location which has
almost as many five-star resorts as it
does palm trees, Stylist took a step
into the unknown and stayed at Club
Med’s flagship deluxe resort, La
Plantation d’Albion, on the west
coast. A sumptuous complex,

of African and Indian design with
mahogany fittings – from which Stylist
caught an early morning glimpse of
monkeys playing on the porch. And if
one room isn’t enough? Book a luxury
private villa, complete with personal
butler and private infinity pool.
Why it’s hot From the bustling daily
market in the capital, Port Louis (which
easily rivals the souks of Marrakech
and Istanbul) to the carefree nightlife
of Grand Baie – which runs alongside
a picturesque harbour – it’s easy to do
as much or as little as you like.

include a fragrant Creole fish curry and
ginger and garlic langoustine. The
resort’s restaurant, Le Phare, is set on
a rocky peninsula; tables look out
onto waves crashing against the rocks
below. There’s also garden oasis La
Villa Garden (lavillagarden.com), serving
classic French cuisine (sautéed foie
gras and lobster thermidor).
Photo opportunity Just a 20-minute
boat ride from Pointe Maurice on the
east coast is Ile aux Cerfs, regarded as
(and we can vouch for this) Mauritius’
most beautiful beach. Miles of white
sand, turquoise sea and beach-front
restaurants make this the perfect spot
for those all-important hammock shots.
