LONG LASHES
yelashes are big news
this season. With Shu
Uemura’s Tokyo Lash
E Bars popping up and no
self-respecting beauty
addict without her own pair of lash
extensions, we’re all after a flutter fix.
But of course there’s no denying we
would all rather grow our own than
fake it – proven by figures that show
there has been a 50% increase in lash
conditioning product sales since last
year. Stylist guides you through the
latest launches that are set to give
you (natural) eyelashes to die for.
CONDITION
You wouldn’t skimp on hair conditioner,
so why not consider your eyelashes
too? The latest lengthening formulas
are not overnight miracle potions but
they can deliver some serious results
after two to three months, leaving you
with fuller, lusher lashes.
The first sign of lash-lengthening
products came in early last year with
the drug Latisse (designed by Allergan,
the creators of Botox), which was
initially designed to treat glaucoma
patients, and was only available on
prescription. A solution that looks like
eye drops and comes with disposable
brushes (one droplet is placed onto
the brush which you then swipe over
the lash line from the inner corner
to the edge), patients quickly found
that one of the (rather welcome) side
effects was the dramatic effect the
formula had on lash growth within
a mere two months.
Now, given the sheer prescription
strength of the original formula, Latisse
is launching a gentler version that is due
to go on sale in the US imminently, with
prices starting at $89 (£60).
For a more accessible option that
uses natural, gentle ingredients, try
going green with Adonia’s LashAlive
Serum, £49. Its key ingredient is
organic yarrow, an anti-inflammatory
herb which is often found to stimulate
hair growth by strengthening the root
of hair follicles. Other nourishing
properties include chamomile, which
strengthens and conditions hair, while
patchouli extract acts as an antiseptic
that conditions dry and undernourished
areas around the eyes.

NO NEED TO FAKE IT
Lash treatments and mascaras that promise to lengthen and volumise your flutter are the
latest trend on the make-up scene. So it’s out with the fake and in with your own
One of the best high street options
is L’Oréal’s Renewal Lash Serum, which
at £10.99 is a bargain to boot. Three
years in the making, this formula
contains Pro-Vitamin B5 and Arginine,
an amino acid found in keratin, one
of the main components of lashes to
thicken and lengthen. In addition,
extracts taken from a conditioning
Mexican plant called centella asiatica
– known for its healing properties –
helps protect lashes to support further
growth. The cleverly curved applicator
is designed to fit onto the eye socket
so that it can reach the root and
deposit the serum effectively.
Then you have Blink, the walk-in
brow bar, which is gaining equal

accolade for its lash extension services
– launched recently to provide a
one-stop shop for all eye grooming
purposes. They have a small product
range that is rapidly growing, and
have just announced the launch
of their Luscious Lash Oil, £16,
available from August. Simply swipe
the formula (a concoction of lavender,

rosemary and bamboo) onto hairs,
with what resembles a small paint
brush, to stimulate hair growth.
Jan Marini’s Age Intervention
Eyelash, £99, uses the same applicator
but is designed for more mature lashes
and comes in a formula that will last.
One tube has a lifespan of about six
months. The enhancer combines a
peptide formula that includes proteins
to stimulate growth and reproduce
denser lashes.
LENGTHENINGMASCARA
Forward-thinking cosmetic companies
have also come up with more compact,
multitasking options. The Anew Lash
Transforming Mascara + Serum, £10,
is a handy essential from Avon which
combines mascara and treatment in
one easy-to-use dual-ended wand. On
one end is the serum – applied to a
clean eye at the lashes’ roots – which
contains Bio-Lash technology to
prevent hair loss and reduce breakages
while improving strength of individual
hairs. On the opposite end is the
mascara to coat through lashes in
order to lengthen immediately.
Another gadget wand to lengthen
and separate lashes is Lancôme’s
Ôscillation Powermascara, £28, a
mascara that vibrates 7,000 times
a minute and coats 360 degrees of
every hair. When it launched last year it
had a waiting list of 21,000 worldwide
so it’s fitting that the most recent lash
invention comes again from the
Lancôme powerhouse.
Hypnôse Precious Cells (£22), which
has gone to the top of the bestseller
list in just two weeks, is a mascara
and conditioner in one. It contains
ingredients taken from a rare Swiss
apple stem cell that’s also used in
their skincare line. This magic extract
regenerates cells at the root,
strengthening and thickening lashes
as well as mending fragile ones. Other
star ingredients include hyaluronic
acid for hydration, madescassoside
taken from a Madagascan plant to
strengthen, and arginine, an amino
acid, to nourish. For lash-by-lash
fullness, Lancôme has also created
a multi-dimensional brush, to separate
each lash and its wand gets right into
the root of the eyelash.
And finally, for stronger lashes
without the price tag, dip a cotton
bud into extra-virgin olive oil or caster
oil and swoop over eyes before bed;
this will work to strengthen them
while you sleep. After a few nights,
you’ll see a stronger flutter – perfect
for the summer when you want
to skip the mascara.
