Breast cancer
vaccine
The fight against breast cancer has
taken a giant leap forward thanks
to researchers at the Cleveland
Clinic, Ohio, USA, who have
announced that a vaccine against
the disease could begin its clinical
trials within the next two years.
The potential vaccine – so far
only trialled on mice – is welcome
news to cancer charities in the UK,
where breast cancer kills 12,000
women every year.
Breakthrough Breast Cancer’s
Dr Caitlin Palframan says, “The
idea is that the vaccine would be
given pre-menopausally to women
who have finished having children.
We need to see large-scale clinical
trials to find out if it would be safe
and effective but this research
could have important implications
for how we might prevent breast
cancer in the future.”

BREAST CANCER COULD
SOON BE HISTORY THANKS
TO A NEW VACCINE
A month after a record 142 female
MPs were elected into government
(although let’s not forget this only
makes up 22% of parliament – one of
the smallest percentages in Europe),
it’s fitting that theatreland is paying
tribute to women in politics.
Through its Women, Power And
Politics season, the Tricycle Theatre,
London, is set to examine both the
historical impact of women in
politics (presented as Then), and the
contemporary issues that we now
face (entitled Now) with new work
