You’ve heard it before and you’ll hear it again
– drinking water equals clearer skin. During the
winter months, experts suggest upping your intake
to more than one litre per day. “If your skin is
dehydrated, it will appear dull,” explains cosmetic
dermatologist Dr Ravi Jain. “Water keeps it
moisturised, limiting the damage caused by cold
weather, heated rooms and caffeinated drinks.”
MOISTURISEINDULGENTLY
Well-moisturised skin looks noticeably more
luminous. “A smoother surface reflects the light
better and thus makes the skin ‘glow’,” explains
Dr Stefanie Williams, from European Dermatology
London. Dr Williams recommends Neostrata
Bionic Face Cream, (£29.36, 0800 043 3365).
Invest in an energy-boosting serum too, such as
Oskia Get Up & Glow, (£64.50, 020-7734 1234)
(1), which gives skin a healthy glow.
MASSAGEYOURSKIN
Facial fans swear by massage to stimulate the
circulation and bring fresh oxygen to the cells.
Facial acupuncturist Annee de Mamiel says:
“Work from the chin upwards, using the middle
and index finger to create circular movements,
travelling upwards and outwards towards the
forehead. Do this twice a day for a few minutes
using Aromatherapy Associates Revitalising Face
Oil, (£34.75, 020-8569 7030) (2) for brighter skin.”
DON’TSTRIPYOURSKIN
Glowing skin demands a thorough cleanse.
“Use lukewarm water to open pores without
over-drying the complexion,” advises Dr Mervyn
Patterson, a cosmetic dermatologist, before using
nourishing balms and oils. Try The Organic
Pharmacy Carrot Butter Cleanser, (£29.95,
0844-800 8399) (3), which is loaded with shea
and cocoa butter. Limit bathtime to 15 minutes
– to prevent dry and parched skin – and swap your
soap for a body-wash like Dermol 200 Shower
Emollient, (£6.40, pharmacy2u.co.uk), which
cleanses while moisturising. After bathing, apply a
long-lasting moisturiser like E45 Endless Moisture
Light Caring Body Milk, (£3.91, nationwide).

2 WEEKLY TIPS
BEINGREDIENTSAVVY
When shopping for skincare, scan labels
for glow-getting ingredients. Dermatologists
recommend vitamin C for its skin brightening
powers. Try The Body Shop Vitamin C Plus
Time Release Capsules, (£14.65, bodyshop.co.
uk) (1). Retinol is a vitamin A derivative that
stimulates cell turnover and increases collagen
production to leave skin revitalised. We like it
in RoC Retin-Ox Wrinkle Correxion Daily
Moisturiser (£26.99, boots.com) (2).
EXFOLIATEWISELY
Shed dead skin cells with scrubs or home-use
peels containing alpha or beta hydroxy-acids
like glycolic, lactic and salicylic. “These work
by dissolving that dead top layer and make way
for fresher skin beneath. But be aware that
exfoliation strips away part of our skin’s natural
antioxidants so replace this lost moisture with
antioxidant-rich products such as Skinceuticals
CE Ferulic serum, (£115, skinbrands.co.uk) (3),”
says Dr Williams.
NOURISHFROMWITHIN
According to Dr Howard Murad, Clinical
Professor of Medicine at UCLA, we should
make dietary supplements a key component
of our beauty regime as 80% of our skin’s cells
can only be reached through the blood stream.
Up your intake of foods rich in omega-3 fatty
acids, such as salmon, which can keep skin
glowing and healthy. “Fish oils not only have
anti-inflammatory effects but also help
maintain the fluidity of cell membranes, which
can help prevent skin from drying out,” says
nutritionist and dietician Jane Griffin. So stock
up on Seven Seas Extra High Strength Pure
Cod Liver Oil capsules, (£5.44, boots.com).
SEEKPROFESSIONALHELP
Dr Patterson recommends a monthly gentle
peel or microdermabrasion, which removes
dead skin and smooths away irregularities.
“Having professional treatments can enhance
hydration and the effects can last for several
months,” he explains.

PERFECT SKIN
MAKE-UP TRICKS
PREPWELL
“Use a primer before your foundation as this
evens out the skin texture, holds in moisture and
offers smoother application for the rest of your
make-up,” says beauty expert Ruby Hammer. She
recommends Ruby & Millie Pre-Base Formula,
(£9.50, boots.com), which has a subtle pink glow
that works on all skintones, even dark skin where
it can counteract grey patches.
SWITCHTOCREAMFORMULAS
Using products that hydrate and nourish
is common sense. “If you normally use powder
formulations, try swapping to creams,” explains
make-up guru, Bobbi Brown. “Using powder
on dry skin can make it appear flaky and dull.
Creamy formulas look much more natural and add
a healthy glow.” Choose a foundation base that
matches the colour of your neck and décolletage.
BLUSHUP
A few strokes of blusher will amp-up your look.
Emma Doherty, head make-up artist at Jane
Iredale, suggests investing in a cream-based
formula in a warm peach or pink shade. “Apply
to the apple of the cheek – the bit that contracts
when you smile and blend the colour up towards
the middle of the ear.” We love Smashbox O-Glow
Intuitive Cheek Colour, (£19, debenhams.com) (1),
which transforms to the exact shade of blush
that you naturally flush. For a natural glimmer, try
Myface Cosmetics R&B Rouge/Blush in Med/Dark
Sul ‘tan’ of Swing (£9.78, boots.com) (2).
HIGHLIGHTSMARTLY
Clever highlighting can bathe skin with
an enviable glow. Very few make-up artists
do it better than Aaron De Mey, Lancôme’s
artistic director. “For instant luminosity, apply
a highlighter to the areas where the light hits your
face: the top of the cheekbones, centre of the
nose, the cupid’s bow of your lips, the middle
of the chin and the inner corner of the eyes,”
says De Mey, who recommends using a creamy
product that has an iridescent sparkle to it, like
Lancôme Flash Retouche in Universal Light,
(£23.50, nationwide) (3).
