LIVE YOUR DREAM
Ever wondered how some
women achieve more in
a year than most of us do in a
lifetime? Four power women
tell us their 2010 goals – and
share tips for attaining yours
his is your year. Never before has
the working landscape been better
suited to nurturing women’s
T
success. The recession has stung
men much harder than it has
women (the number of men in work has fallen by
3%, while the number of women has only fallen
by 0.8%), creating opportunities for us to make
our mark. According to trendspotter Jeremy
Baker, of ECSP Europe Business School, we can
expect double the number of female MPs, 100%
growth in women-owned start-ups and 11% more
female millionaires a year over the next decade.
Inspiring stuff. And as 46% of UK millionaires are
now women (set to rise to 53% by 2020), this
decade it can be you making wealthy waves. If
you want to be part of the next decade’s elite,
like the women pictured here, you need to start
setting goals and taking control of your direction
over the next 12 months.
Convinced New Year’s resolutions are the
quickest route to failure? Wrong. Research has
shown that as soon as you pledge to change, you
get a boost in mood. The bigger the resolution,
the more hopeful you feel. The mood boost can
even defy logic. For example, starting a diet
makes people feel physically stronger and just
deciding to exercise makes people feel taller.
Writing down your career, financial and personal
“British women are
truly flying the
flag for affluence
and success”
goals will push you into making them happen.
So if you’ve ever fancied penning a novel to
push literary treasure JK Rowling off the number
one spot, or giving Tamara Mellon’s £102m Jimmy
Choo empire some competition, start feeling
inspired. Because even though you could be
forgiven for having a rough 2009, a quick scan
of our line-up of power women opposite shows
that British women truly are flying the flag
for affluence and success.
If you’re still struggling for motivation,
read on. We’ve quizzed four of the country’s
most inspirational and successful business
women about their ambitious resolutions,
both professional and personal, and their game
plan on how to get there. Take note
ladies (or get your PA to).
