Winnie
Mandela’s
life on screen
During the 27 years her husband
Nelson was imprisoned, Winnie
Mandela fought desperately for
his freedom. Now, to mark the
20th anniversary of Mandela’s
release on 11 February, the BBC is
screening Mrs Mandela, a drama
which stars Sophie Okonedo as
Winnie. It charts Winnie’s rise
within the African National
Congress party, her periods of
imprisonment, accusations of
kidnapping and murder plus
the breakdown of their marriage.
BBC Four’s Richard Klein says,
“[Winnie] is one of the most
controversial figures to emerge in
South Africa yet for many people
she remains a shadowy figure.”
Mrs Mandela is on at 9pm,
25 January on BBC Four

myself,” says Annand. “It’s their room,
