Is feminism
a thing of
the past?
Living Dolls The Return Of Sexism
by Natasha Walter, out 4 February,
Virago, £12.99
More than a decade after
she wrote The New Feminism,
Natasha Walter is back and
prepared to admit that she was
wrong. She argues in her new
book that far from levelling with
the boys, feminism is waning and
women are being sexualised at an
increasingly younger age. In the age
of Jordan, Hollyoaks Babes calendars
and endless lads’ mags; is sexualisation
something which is imposed on us, or
are we doing it to ourselves?
Walters covers all the areas that you might
expect, from pole dancing to prostitution and
modern day views on marriage and monogamy.
Chapters include an in-depth description of
a ‘Babes on the Bed’ competition, as well as
conversations with various glamour models,
lap dancers and teenage girls who firmly
believe in sex, rather than love.
Her arguments will make you think differently
about everything you do: from the guilty
pleasures of watching Booze Britain, the
indomitable rise of Katie Price and the mouthy

14-year-old girls on your bus who know too
much about stuff they shouldn’t.
Feminism hinges on a woman’s right to
choose but, according to Walter, our choices
are either celebrated or marginalised to such
an extent by society that they actually fail
to become legitimate choices at all.
It’s enlightening but, at times, it is a bit like
being beaten round the head with a moral text
book. Feminist literature is not for everyone
but it is a thought-provoking and relevant read
whether you agree with her or not.
