Lucy Davis
spills the
beans
British actress, Lucy Davis, 37,
moved Stateside seven years ago. She
talks to Stylist about LA’s weight
obsession and why she’s a soft touch
You moved to LA in 2003, do you
consider it home, now?
I didn’t love it at first, I was too
homesick. I used to miss London, but
then when I was in London I’d miss LA.
I realised I was in a glass-half-empty
situation so I decided to focus on
embracing what I loved about LA
instead – the sunshine!
You’ve said you lost weight when you
went to LA and consequently got
more acting parts. Have you noticed
a correlation between your weight
and your success?
Probably. I’ve never felt pressured to
lose weight but you have to realise that
weight is about your own mind. You are
either happy with yourself or you’re

not. But I can see why people think
LA is weight-obsessed. I just don’t
really live by that. That’s not to say I’m
always happy with myself. I’m always
beating myself up and that’s how I’ll
always be. I just don’t read anything
about myself now or watch myself on
telly. It’s not because I’m not bothered,
it’s just how I deal with it.

something you’ve learned?
Definitely learned along the way. I’ve
always been the kind of person who
How do your feel about your body?

thinks if you can’t change something,
just accept it. I know that sounds really
harsh but I’m always like, “Just get on
with it, smile and have a laugh.”
I want to always be slim but I have
to accept that I probably won’t always
be slim, because food will get in the
way. I can’t allow people’s opinions
of what I should be affect me. If there
was a universally pleasing weight
I might try and give it a go. But I’ll never
get that because I’ll be one weight
and then I’ll get, “Oh I can’t believe
she’s lost weight” and it’s hurtful.
You’ve been married to actor Owain
Yeoman for three years, what has he
taught you about relationships?
I didn’t think I wanted to get married
before I met Owain. I really thought
that marriage wasn’t for me, it filled
me with fear. I used to have nightmares
about getting married, I would wake
up sweating. Owain and I were friends
for a few months first, and then we
got together. We got married pretty
much a year to the day after first
getting together.
Where do you see yourself in
five years’ time?
I don’t know. I really should have
an answer; surely everyone should
have a plan. I’m sure I’ll have children
at some point. I love working and
I really enjoy my life. I love my husband
and my dog more than anything, so
I’m kind of content, really.
What makes you happy?
I’m addicted to crosswords and quizzes
and I love a website called funtrivia.
com. I know ridiculous amounts of
useless trivia. Animals are also my
passion and I will do anything for them.
What are your weaknesses?
I’m a stupid soft touch, if someone
asked for money I would instantly say
yes. My husband is amazingly tolerant
towards that weakness, especially
when I say: “No I don’t have money left
for rent, I just spent it on the dog.”

to focus on targeting things you can measure visually, ie how you look
in clothes, what you see in the mirror, or by changing your image.

about factual things you can measure, whether that is weight, dress
size or BMI, to enable you to feel good about your body.
