Women to take over 40%
of French boardrooms
The French government
has announced plans to
add more women to its
boardrooms. As reported
in Stylist in October, this
follows a trend set by
Norway in 2002 when Trade
Minister Ansgar Gabrielsen
implemented the 40%
quota. Nicolas Sarkozy’s
UMP party plans to force
large companies to make
at least 40% of their
boardroom members female:
currently it stands at 10%.
France’s decision to
prioritise equality may be

Last week the world clapped their
hands as the CEO of Apple, Steve
Jobs, presented their long-awaited
gadget – the iPad – in San Francisco.
The iPad can be used for reading
iBooks (bought from the soon-to-belaunched
iBookstore), newspapers
and magazines, watching TV and movies
in HD, listening to music, organising
photos, sending email and browsing the

notably, Carla Bruni, who

husband’s political decisions.
So should a similar quota
system exist in the UK?
Currently only 12% of
women sit on British boards,
but Vera Baird MP, Solicitor
General and the woman
responsible for the new
Equalities Bill says not.
“Britain does need more
women on boards. It’s
important, not just for
women’s rights, but to build
a strong economy.” Nor does
a 40% quota seem likely if
