“As many as one in three
women in their 30s and 40s
are thought to have some degree of
genetic hair thinning, and we’re seeing
a surge of women in their late teens
and 20s with the same problem,” says
Lyons. “A common
cause is androgenetic
alopecia – an inherited,
hormone-related
condition. It’s
normally brought on
by certain types of
contraceptive pill,
or stress, both of
which alter the levels
of male hormones in
the body. While some
women don’t react
to these imbalances,
others suffer acne,
hair loss and more.
Iron, zinc and vitamin
B deficiencies can also
cause hair to thin, again
depending on how sensitive you
are to depleted levels.”
If you’ve noticed significant
thinning and are worried, see a
trichologist. If your concern is
safeguarding what volume you’ve got,
add vitamin B and zinc supplements
to your diet, and stock up on

Fekkai, “so eat a healthy diet, rich in
iron, vitamin B, zinc and protein
[eating plenty of dark-green veg,
wholegrains, sea food, eggs, nuts,
seeds and lean red meat should
cover it], and top up with a
good multivitamin and d
plenty of water to keep ep
hair hydrated.”
To maintain quality y
from the outside, hair
should be trimmed
every six weeks,
according to
Fekkai, who also
recommends
replacing the odd

a gloss or henna.

A volumising shampoo is never
going to give you what nature forgot
to, but the really good ones, like
Aussome Volume, £3.49, by y
Aussie, and Full Volume
Shampoo, £15, by Frédéric
Fekkai, do make hair that
bit bouncier. Use them
every three or four
shampoos. Styling-wise,
don’t overdo the thickening g
products as fine hair can
look ‘aerated’ rather than
full. “A simple styling spray
brushed through from root
to tip or a light mousse
worked into hair is enough
to add body while
preserving hair’s natural
swing,” says top stylist George
Northwood. Thickening Hairspray,

Ignore what you’ve read about
diminished sebum production
leading to loss of shine as we age,
says Lyons. “Oil produced
by the scalp doesn’t
travel to the hair, so
it has no bearing on
how glossy it looks.
Hair simply gets
more worn with age
– and the more we
brush and blow-dry
and straighten it, the
more frazzled it
