RICHCOLOURS
Like skin, hair changes colour and tone
with age, losing pigment and as a result
luminosity. But be warned, “The most ageing
thing you can do to your hair once it reaches
that stage is to go back to the colour of your
(earlier) youth, however tempting,” says Lisa
Shepherd, aka the hair colour doctor from
Channel 4’s Ten Years Younger. She adds,
“Brunettes and redheads should almost
always go lighter. The good news is any kind
of colour added to the hair makes it appear
younger, so if you’re a brunette, a few glossy
streaks of caramel and gold will still look as
lustrous as the rich brown of your teens.”
“Cindy Crawford is a great example of

someone who’s aged her hair appropriately
without compromising its sexiness,” adds
leading stylist and colourist Adam Reed.
“She’s replaced the rich, heavy brown of her
20s with highlights and softer, tonal browns,
but she’s still a gorgeous
brunette. If you’re blonde,
adding warm, gold tones
in your 30s and 40s can
take five years off.”
And in your 20s?
Jenny Broome, a senior
colourist at John
Frieda, advises, “To
make the most of your
hair’s natural pigment
and vibrancy, opt for
gentle semi-permanent
treatments such as
vegetable rinses and
wash-in/wash-out
shampoos, or go for
gentle highlights.”
By the time you hit 30,
you should have a pretty
good idea of what suits you,
says Reed, and you can play
around within that palette. If
greys start to come through,
use highlights or lowlights to
blend them in. It’s more
flattering than ousting them
altogether and you avoid harsh
re-growth, which is extremely ageing.
Once you’ve found your perfect
colour, you’ll want it to last as long
as possible. Tinted shampoos and
conditioners are brilliant for reviving
colour, according to Reed, who likes

…IN YOUR 2Os
Now is the time to experiment. Try an edgy
bob, cut a fringe if you’ve never had one, or
chop it all off. It’s all about finding what’s
most flattering for your face. If you’re going
to keep locks long, spare the straighteners, or
