Josh Holloway
reveals all
Despite a meteoric rise to fame, Lost
actor Josh Holloway, 40, credits his
wife and 10-month-old daughter
with keeping him down to earth
Lost became a worldwide
phenomenon incredibly fast. Has the
experience altered you massively?
Sure, I think it’s inevitable if you’re
open to life and what it can do, and
I am. Or I try to be. So it’s been a huge
change. Thankfully, my wife Yessica has
been with me throughout and that has
made it easier. I asked her to marry me
the year we made the pilot for Lost,
and we’d been together a long time
before that. That’s been a wonderful
experience, the whole marriage thing.
We bought our first home and started
a family. That’s what’s important to me.
You and Yessica became parents
in April last year to your daughter,
Java. How is fatherhood?
Oh my God, it’s… I just can’t even
answer that. So many things, it’s so rich
WWWSTYLISTCOUK
and so difficult and wonderful. Now
it’s just those smiles every morning,
when I first get to see the little bean
smile, I’m like, “Oh my God!”. I don’t
care how everything else goes now,
as long as I’m a good father.
It’s a humbling experience to
realise you’re not as tough as you
think you are. When you start the
sleep deprivation thing, it’s a torture
but for a reason. You don’t know
who you are or what day it is, or
what you’re doing. So that’s where
she is right now, she’s got four teeth.
How grounded are you?
Score between 1-5 for each of the statements
(1 being ‘I totally agree’, 5 being ‘I totally disagree’)
X I enjoy spending time in nature and taking time out to notice
the world around me
X I feel very stable and secure in my home life – it’s my retreat
from the stresses of everyday life
X I rarely lose my temper
X I am never described as scatty
X I laugh a lot
X I am a very balanced person
X My family and friends are the most important thing to me
X I am never absent-minded
X I find it easy to let go of my problems and emotions – there’s
no point worrying over things that can’t be changed
JOSH IS BACK FOR THE
SIXTH AND FINAL SEASON
OF LOST ON SKY 1
How do you deal with fame?
Getting to grips with fame has been
an ordeal for me. I don’t like attention
on me. Like anybody, it makes you
self-conscious if someone’s looking
at you all the time, everywhere you
go. It’s impossible not to feel a bit
aware. So I became like a recluse,
I was stuck in my house for the first
year. Not totally, but you just kind
of stay away. So that took a while to
get used to but now I’m OK with it
most of the time, I think I’ve
probably grown past it.
As this is the final season of Lost,
have you started looking ahead?
Of course. We’re not sure what’s next.
My wife and I are planning that as we
go. I will definitely go to LA for some
time, hopefully make the transition into
movies. If not, who knows?
You’ve lived in Oahu, Hawaii where
Lost is filmed for a few years now.
Do you think you’ll find it difficult
moving back to LA?
Absolutely, I am not looking forward
to it actually. It’s like re-entry shock
each time you go to the store and
there are paparazzi taking pictures.
I wouldn’t wish being famous on
anybody. I appreciate the opportunity
to work, and the cash it gives you of
course. That’s all great, but the
celebrity thing, with the explosion of
gossip tabloids, it’s an insidious thing.
My wife and I, we’re in love with
Hawaii and have made close friends.
So we’re going to keep the place there
and go in and out, unless acting goes
the way acting normally goes and I’m
broke and have to rent it! But I grew
up in the country on 33 acres. So
I need more land and less people.
How do you stay so down to earth?
Being married, my wife checks that
s*** at the door. So that helps a lot.
I’m in a really solid relationship and
that does keep me grounded, because
I’m just the stinky man when I get home
– the one that leaves mess out.
The final season of Lost can be seen
on Fridays, 9pm on Sky1

Get grounded (40 and over) You aren’t really present in your life
and it’s likely that your world is quite out of control. Gain some
perspective by spending more time in nature.
Don’t forget the simple things in life (31-39) You’re not well grounded
often worrying about material things like work. Enrich your life through
laughter or spend time with people or children in your circle.
Take some me-time (21-30) You have a reasonable amount of balance
in your life and are fairly grounded. Make sure you work on this. Try
meditation to enrich your sense of wholeness.
You have firm foundations on which to build (11-20) You have a good
sense of the things that matter and rely on friends and family. You’re
sure of what you want out of life and where you’re going.
You’re totally grounded (under 10) You’re at one with your
surroundings and the people who are important to you. This keeps
you balanced and able to have a rounded perspective.
