DAYSTOGO
Think it may be time to consider
the possibility of some kind of fast. I’ve
been reading up on actresses holding
back on the water they drink five days
before to avoid any kind of bloating.
A trip to New York gets in the way of
my new healthy eating regime thanks
to mountain-sized brunches, so David
Kirsch’s Lemon Aid 48 Hour detox
(a lemon and cayenne pepper
concoction to charge the metabolism
and shed weight – Liv Tyler and Anne
Hathaway apparently swear by it)
seems like a good idea.
DAYSTOGO
Fasting is not for me. I give up after
half the day. No willpower here. Too
many Gummi Bear sweets in the office.
DAYSTOGO
I hear that Jessica Alba and Charlize
Theron start their pre-Oscar
treatments up to five weeks before
the event at Ole Henrikson’s LA spa
– yet I have an empty diary… Perhaps
I’ve been a little cavalier in my attitude.
I book myself in for a Decleor Slim
Effect Treatment at Spa Illuminata on
South Audley Street in London. It’s
a full body massage that boosts the
circulation and flushes out the toxins
with a slimming balm that uses
grapefruit, ginger and caffeine extract
to contour my thighs, waist and arms.
I walk out feeling lighter, and rush to
my appointment at Groom in
Selfridges for the Wink & Go
treatment: a lash tint
and mini pedi.
Just as I’m feeling
more presentable,
I bump into a fashion
editor friend Dora
and she asks me
what exercises I’ve
been doing to get
the bits “on show”
into shape – the last
celeb she shot for
the cover of
a magazine had
a programme she
stuck to the week
before an event.
I feel the colour
drain from my slightly red and angry
brow area as I panic and make an
emergency call to personal trainer
Niki Day who trains plenty of
discerning glamorous women. She
draws me up a series of exercises
I can squeeze in to my day: I have to
bash out 100 reps of press-ups off the
kitchen counter while I’m waiting for
the kettle to boil, and tri-cep dips off
my desk, which leaves my colleagues
looking at me like I’m mad but it’s
desperate-measure time now.
DAYSTOGO
The lovely Daniella from Vita Liberata
tanning comes over to my flat to give
me a quick fake tan at home. It’s the
special Red Carpet treatment which
leaves a golden glow (something
between an instant tint and fake tan)
that doesn’t have a hint of orange and
looks super natural by the time I’m due
out in front of the flash-popping
cameras. She is so quick that she’s
popped up the tent in my bathroom
and done the tan within 15 minutes.
BAFTADAY
Midday: I arrive at the Dorchester
to check into my suite at midday –
yes, that’s right, suite! – and head to
Charles Worthington’s Styling Suite,
packed with preening women, as he
tells me about the Asprey party the
night before. He arrived with St
Trinian’s Tamsin Egerton, swinging by
the back entrance to enable Tamsin
to get her bling pre-entrance – a
drive-through jeweller, every woman’s
dream! I watch as the girls arrive in
jeans and Ugg boots with just-got-outof-bed
hair and leave with Hollywood
starlet curls and chic up-dos. After my
curlers are set, I pop to the Dorchester
Spatisserie for a manicure and
pedicure to get my toes ready for my
peep-toe platforms and to show off my
beautiful gold Anya Hindmarch clutch.
15h00: At the Lancôme styling suite,
I opt for a super-dramatic smoky eye
with nude lips. Lancôme has done
everyone’s make-up today and I later
learn there’s an army of make-up artists
with tool belts of
mascara, concealer
and brushes on hand
at the event later to
offer touch ups – phew.

EMMA FINDS HER SPIRITUAL
HOME IN THE CHAIR
OF A STYLING PRO
Suite (Charles is out doing Claire
Danes’ hair), Matthew works my
hair into a super-glam, Forties side
parting and wave, with some gorgeous
platinum finish pins for a modern twist.
Alistair whisks me over to Asprey
to borrow some jewellery, where I pick
out some beautiful vintage drop
aquamarine earrings and a diamond
bracelet. Just two pieces and they’re
worth a whopping £30,000! I keep
touching my ears to make sure they’re
still in place. I don’t know how
actresses wander around without
becoming nervous wrecks.
17h00: It’s red carpet time… I travel
with British model Poppy Delevigne
CELEBRITY PAMPER
who is working a Little Bo Peep
hairstyle with a dress from Chanel. We
arrive at the Royal Opera House at
6pm just as man of the moment Colin
Firth appears with wife, Livia. It’s the
screams that really throw you. Joely
Richardson and Vanessa Redgrave are
signing autographs as I wobble down
the carpet in my platform YSL shoes.
I’m holding onto Alistair’s arm for dear
life, petrified that I will fall flat on my
face. I have elaborate scenarios playing
out in my head, tripping over, dragging
down some A-list celebrity’s dress on
the way down and breaking my nose.
But I make it, and don’t trip. At the
awards, I’m nestled in between Poppy
and the statuesque Erin O’Connor who
is working a Twenties flapper-inspired
bob. It’s a fabulously decadent evening,
as we look on at all the superstars in
front of us, Dustin and Lisa Hoffman
(who I know from her amazing range
of skincare), Mickey Rourke, Kate
“Elaborate scenarios play
out in my head where
I trip over, dragging down
an A-lister’s dress”
Winslet and Uma Thurman. Poppy
and I look on to see who we can
spot – we are ridiculously excited
at Twilight’s R Patz and Kristen Stewart
coolly arriving late.
Dinner in Grosvenor House
looks like the set of Avatar with
lush green rainforests and I am
straining to see if I can see whether
Kate Winslet is eating the steak we’re
having for the main course. Hollywood
mogul Harvey Weinstein is chatting
to nominees but I can’t see his wife,
Marchesa designer Georgina
Chapman anywhere.
Afterwards, we pop to the afterparty
upstairs, but not before I return
my Asprey jewellery. There is a slightly
undignified moment as I have to take
off the jewels and hand them back, but
I do feel myself sighing with slight relief
and I can stop fiddling with my ear.
I decide to call it a night after a final
glass of champagne. Five hours getting
ready was exhausting. I can’t even
imagine doing that on my wedding day
but I felt a part of the glitterati for
a night. I fall into my enormous bed,
snuggling up in my flannel pyjamas
before I turn into a pumpkin. I put in
an order for breakfast in bed, deciding
to prolong the experience just until
my first meeting on Monday morning
back at the office. I nibble on the
chocolates in bed and see if I can
catch any of the BAFTA coverage
on TV before I fall asleep knowing
I’ll be back to reality when I
check out tomorrow morning. WORDSEMMASMITHPHOTOGRAPHYEDMILLERCOUKGETTYIMAGESSTOCKISTSANDPRICESCHARLESWORTHINGTONCHARLESWORTHINGTONCOUKDAVIDKIRSCHSPACENKCOM
