Hippie Hippie Shake Eat Pray Love Never Let me Go The Ghost Dear John adaptions From hardback to Hollywood
HIPPIE HIPPIE
SHAKE
BY RICHARD NEVILLE
The book A memoir by
the editor of the Sixties
satirical magazine Oz.
When Neville wasn’t
on trial for distributing
sexually explicit material,
he was hanging out with
John Lennon, Yoko One,
Germaine Greer and
anyone who was anyone
in swinging London,
especially if they had
long hair and took
psychedelic drugs. It’s
vital you read the book
before you see the film,
as under all that hair it’s
difficult to tell the
characters apart.
The film Released this
May, the film stars Cillian
Murphy (28 Days Later)
as Richard Neville and
Sienna Miller as his
girlfriend, Louise Ferrier.
Sienna was plagued by
the paps during shooting
when she was required to
pose naked in a field of
daisies, but there was
even more scandal when
Germaine Greer had
reservations about her
portrayal, “You used
to have to die before
assorted hacks started
munching your remains
and modelling a new
version of you out of their
own excreta,” she
thundered furiously.

EAT, PRAY
LOVE: ONE
WOMAN’S
SEARCH FOR
EVERYTHING
BY ELIZABETH GILBERT
The book The real-life
story of a 32-year-old New
Yorker who has it all:
handsome husband, big
house and high-flying
career. But when her
marriage descends into
bitter divorce and she
sinks into depression
Elizabeth takes off on a
journey of a lifetime. Her
12-month journey through
Italian food, Indian prayer
and Indonesian love was
such a massive hit it spent
over 110 weeks on the New
York Times bestseller list.
The film Celebrities
clamoured to heap praise
on the book, so when
Julia Roberts said, “It’s
what I'm giving all my
girlfriends,” it was little
surprise to see her snap
up the role of Elizabeth.
There was some
controversy when the
crew closed down the
Hari Mandir Ashram
near Delhi, preventing
local worshippers from
entering, but literary
fans shouldn’t be
disappointed, the film
promises to be faithful
to the story and the
brooding Javier Bardem
plays love interest Felipe.

NEVER
LET ME GO
BY KAZUO ISHIGURO
The book Penned by
the author of Remains
Of The Day, this literary
bestseller was shortlisted
for the Man Booker.
Narrated by 31-year-old
Kathy, the plot dips back
and forth from her
strange, seemingly idyllic
childhood at the Hailsham
School to the fate that
awaits her and her friends
as adults. To say any more
would spoil the twist in
this heartbreaking story.
The film Reuniting An
Education’s Carey
Mulligan as Kathy and
Keira Knightley in a
supporting role (they
appeared in Pride And
Prejudice together)
and with a screenplay
written by Alex (The
Beach) Garland, this film `
is set to be big. Movie
bloggers are in a frenzy
and book lovers in a tiz
about anyone daring to
adapt such a subtly
nuanced story into a film.
Shooting the movie wasn’t
without its setbacks,
especially as Carey
Mulligan failed her driving
test and she needed a
licence for the role. “No
hand-to-eye coordination,”
she confessed as
she explained to an
interviewer why they had
to shoot on a private road.

THE
GHOST
BY ROBERT HARRIS
The book Ever wonder
how Katie Price pens
so many books? The
answer is a ghost writer,
and no celebrity or
politician can publish
their memoirs
without them. In this
fast-paced political
thriller, an anonymous
narrator is paid to
produce the
‘autobiography’ of the
recently retired prime
minister Adam Lang.
But the suspiciously
Blair-like Lang is
accused of war crimes
and the previous
‘ghost’ died under
very suspicious
circumstances.
The film Directed
by disgraced genius
Roman Polanski and
with such thinly veiled
characters, this film
(called The Ghost
Writer) was always
going to court
controversy. But
the team finally
overcame casting
troubles and Ewan
McGregor, Pierce
Brosnan and the
surprisingly good Kim
Cattrall means praise
and box office success
are guaranteed. It’s
out soon so hotfoot
it to Waterstone’s fast!

ADAPTATIONS
DEAR
JOHN
BY NICHOLAS SPARKS
The book King of
romantic fiction, Nicholas
Sparks set tears flowing
worldwide with smash hit
book-turned-movie The
Notebook. Love once
again takes centre stage
with Dear John, the tale
of virginal volunteer
Savannah and gorgeousbut-troubled
army boy
John. Two weeks after
meeting on the beach he’s
back on active duty and
as the years pass letters
become their lifeline. Yes,
it’s more likely to become
a guilty pleasure than a
Booker winner but with
its twists and turns it’s the
perfect romantic read.
The film This is the fifth
Nicholas Sparks book to
be made into a movie
which is a testament to the
author’s storytelling. In
fact, another two books
are being developed and
The Last Song, starring
teen star Miley Cyrus, is
out in spring. Amanda
Seyfried and Channing
Tatum play the almost
impossibly good-looking
pair in Dear John. In fact,
they’re said to be so good
together, cinemagoers
clamoured to see the film
in the States – and it even
knocked Avatar off
the top spot.
