Daryl Hannah
gets personal
Actress Daryl Hannah, 49, talks to
Stylist about ageing gracefully and
dealing with nude scenes
You grew up in Chicago and you
divide your time between California
and the Rocky Mountains. Where do
you feel most at home?
The Rockies – it’s where I go to refuel
and I’m in love with the wildlife. The
wilderness gives me hope and peace
of mind. Cities tend to make me feel
a little bit frenetic and disoriented.
Can you still feel at home in a city?
Absolutely. I can navigate cities really
well. I love being able to jump on
public transport and go exploring.
But I much prefer to visit cities than
to live in them.
You have an environmentally friendly
lifestyle. Do you think that’s a
reaction to your affluent upbringing?
My parents didn’t flash their wealth at
all. My dad was very humble, he didn’t
believe in being ostentatious and we

were taught good values. I’d rather
have a small house in the middle of a
meadow or a forest, than a huge house
next to another huge house. My dream
is to eventually fine-tune things down
to the essentials – I’m trying to get rid
of crap all the time. When Gandhi died
he only had eight possessions.
Your environmental and humanitarian
work is an important part of your life.
Do you find acting somewhat
frivolous compared to this?
Humans are complex creatures and we

ENJOYS LEARNING TO BE LESS
INSECURE AS SHE GETS OLDER
all need a creative outlet. Movies can
open your heart to another world that
provides escape and entertainment –
they make you laugh, make you cry and
take you out of your world for
a while. I’ll never give up having a
creative outlet; it’s essential to my life.
Your character in A Closed Book is
quite troubled. Are you drawn to
darker characters in order to escape
the ‘blonde bombshell’ label?
I’m drawn to things that are well written
– good stories, great actors. This movie
had all those qualities. It’s always great
to play something different from what
you’ve done before.
You’ve used body doubles in the
past and this film has some nudity.
Have you lost your inhibitions as
you’ve got older?
Obviously it’s uncomfortable to be
naked in front of the crew, but I didn’t
use body doubles because I was
inhibited. I am prone to shyness, but
my objection to nudity is that when
you’re in your 20s, scenes are added
to movies where you’re naked because
they want to exploit you. I’ve had that
throughout my career.
You turn 50 later this year. Are
you embracing maturity?
I don’t really think about it. I’ve
definitely matured in a great way,
but there are certain downsides to
ageing. You break more easily, you
don’t bounce as much, you stiffen up.
But I’m still super active – I snowboard,
I ride horses and I do stunts in movies.
What I look forward to is letting go of
more stuff that gets in my way, like
being insecure or self-conscious, which
is a waste of time and energy.
What aspects of your personality
do you feel you have to work on?
I still have to push myself to be more
gregarious and extroverted – that’s
a challenge for me. And I’m also a
big procrastinator.

Highest score Section A (you value possessions
most highly) Be careful not to confuse what
you have with what you are. Keep a diary of
everything you buy. Afterwards, think about
what else you could have spent the money on
– a holiday, or investing in yourself in some way.
Highest score Section B (you value
experiences most highly) It’s good to create
memories. However, could it be that you don’t
think you’re worthy of nice things? If you go out
a little less, you could treat yourself instead.
Highest score Section C (you value people
most highly) You like to spend your money on
others. This is lovely, but make sure you spoil
yourself occasionally, too – whether you invest
in an evening class, a nice meal or new clothes.
