ESCAPE Routes
Check into
Cornwall’s
chic retreat
Chuck out the clichés of surfers, pasties
and cream teas – this autumn, Cornwall
has a fabulous new look. With the
launch of eco-chic boutique Hotel
Scarlet, complete with bright-red hot
tubs on the cliff and an Ayurvedic
indoor tented spa, you can leave your
wellies at home, bring some designer
woollies and pose on the terrace or
learn to knit beside the fire.
The chic, minimalist rooms look
out onto Mawgan Porth beach,
and suites have statement baths in
the centre of the room. Outdoor
types can hire out surfboards and
self-heating wetsuits, and even if
it rains, you can't beat Cornwall’s
spectacular storms.
Why it’s great Cornwall has a
climate a good few degrees
warmer than the rest of the UK,
so you can still go on the beach in a
T-shirt at this time of year, and
sometimes into December.
Eating and drinking St Petroc’s in
Padstow is Rick Stein’s most revered
restaurant (rickstein.com, see left),
serving warming soups, confit duck
and bistro meals. The other celeb
chef hangout, Fifteen Cornwall
(fifteencornwall.co.uk), has seasonal
tasting menus, wine-matched food
and amazing views of Watergate Bay’s
two-mile beach. Have a Cornish cream
tea at Cupcakes Tea Room (Middle St,
01208-880 867) in pretty Port Isaac,
where Doc Martin was filmed. The
Cornish way is to put the jam on before
the cream (do it the other way around

COME ON IN, THE WATER'S
LOVELY. AND THE VIEW'S
NOT BAD EITHER
and it’s a Devon tea) – and don’t forget
the cider. At Scarlet, Black And Gold
brew tastes like fine wine.
Photo opportunity Drive to National
Trust site Bedruthan Steps. These
dramatic pillars of rock in the sand were
supposedly where local Cornish giant
Bedruthan walked, and the views are
stunning. Walk down the stone steps to
find deserted beaches, rock pools and
deep smugglers' caves.
Purse-friendly pillow Beachcombers
Apartments (breaksincornwall.com)
overlook Watergate Bay with one-bed
apartments sleeping up to four from
£90 per night (that’s less than £25
a night each!).
