Literature’s
‘dark lady’
reveals all
Reborn, Early Diaries: 1947-1964, by
Susan Sontag, edited by David Rieff,
out on 22 Oct, Penguin Paperback,
£8.99 Counting Woody Allen among
her fans, writer and philosopher
Susan Sontag authored four
novels, a collection of short
stories, several plays and six books
of essays. Now, posthumously, this
is the first of three installments
of her diaries, compiled by her
son, David Rieff.
It doesn’t matter if you don’t know w
much about the ‘dark lady’ of literature re
(although her 15-year relationship with th
photographer Annie Leibovitz is one of fhher
legacies); the entries are instantly engaging,
ranging from short epigrammatic nuggets
and longer musings about whichever artist
has engrossed her that day, to more intimate
revelations about her burgeoning sexuality.
The diary covers her teenage years, as Sontag
impatiently writes a list of all the works she
wants to read at that very moment. Later
on, she makes ‘notes on her childhood’. It’s
refreshing to dip in and out of someone’s
life without having to get stuck into heavy
biographical detail.

Stylist’s
book of the
week
Reading this book will probably make you
feel both more intelligent and more daft;
the scope of her knowledge and intellect is
dwarfing and produces pangs of guilt about
only having read Dan Brown books this year.
Having said that, it’s packed with sex and
drama (Sontag married her husband Philip
Rieff after only a 10-day courtship) that this
could leave Jackie Collins blushing.
But whatever your reading IQ, Sontag is one
fascinating diarist; someone you’d really want
to get to know, or at least wonder at from afar.

A GATE AT THE STAIRS
BY LORRIE MOORE
Out now, Faber and Faber, £16.99
Set just after 9/11, this is part
coming-of-age drama, part mystery.
Half-Jewish Tassie Keltjin narrates
as she embarks on student life
and a job nannying which is more
difficult that she ever imagined.
Astute and lots of suspense.
CHERYL COLE, 3 WORDS
Out 26 Oct, £6.98, Nothing can
stop this pop-culture princess’s
almighty rise to super-stardom –
not even a solo album that’s
distinctly lacking that flamboyant
Girls Aloud flair. But it does have some X-Factor: album title
track 3 Words – a duet with Will I Am – is a hit in the making
and we love Parachute, a ballad that proves that, despite
a bit of over-auto-tuning, Ms Cole certainly can sing.

Out 26 Oct, Sony Home Pictures, £11.68
This is Fatal Attraction remade with less
rabbit cruelty and more camp clichés.
Sharon (Beyoncé Knowles, right) and
Derek (Idris Elba) are happily married: cue
psycho Lisa (Heroes’ supermom, Ali Larter)
who wants a piece of her man at any cost.
Quality acting from the three lead roles is
let down by a weak script. Rent, don’t buy.
