The pill that
stops carbs in
their tracks
Admit it: there are few things in
life more comforting than a bowl
of mashed potatoes or a stack of
hot, buttered toast. The trouble is,
thanks to that pesky Mr Atkins, it’s
difficult to tuck in guilt-free.
Enter DEcarb, an all-natural
supplement
launching in the
UK later this
year. It claims to
be clinically
proven to remove
up to 66% of
carbs from
your meals by
‘blocking’ them
from being
digested
– potentially
helping to
encourage
weight loss.
Pass the pasta.
ENVIRONMENT
Refill your
conscience
Ever glance at the mountain
of plastic water bottles on
your desk and feel a pinch of
guilt? Ever begrudge paying
for what comes out of your
tap for free? The
£1.5bn-a-year
water-bottle industry ry
is the planet’s enemy, my,
wasting money and
using up natural
resources. And now w
London is doing
something about
it. Following
the news that
Bundanoon,
Australia, banned
bottled water
last month, you
can now fill up at
a water fountain
in Hyde Park for
20p. If successful, Tube, bus
and railway stations across
the capital are next in line.

WORK "SO, REMIND ME –
HOW DO I FOLD THIS TO
MAKE AN AEROPLANE?"
Stylist champions
the four-day working week
Imagine what you could achieve with
a three-day weekend. A spotless
house, fluency in Finnish, your own
vegetable patch, world peace… that
precious extra day would be enough
to eradicate stress and make you feel
like you were one step closer to a
work/life balance.
Sounds like a pipe dream? Not in
Utah, US. In August 2008, they moved
the majority of government employees,
to ‘10-4’ (that’s working 10-hour days,
four days a week), hoping that energy
bills would be slashed. Sounds like a
dream come true. But could it work over
here? Two businesswomen battle it out.
"IS IT THE WINE YOU FIND
INTIMIDATING, OR ME?"
“ITWON’TWORK” “IT’SMOTIVATING”
says Julia Hobsbawm,
CEO of Editorial
Intelligence and author
of The See-Saw: 100
Ideas For Work Life
Balance, Atlantic, £6.99
“This wouldn’t work in the UK. What is
brilliant for one person is disastrous for
another. There’s a need to shift from the
9-5 model, but not everyone’s job allows
10-4 flexibility. As a working mum, the
more I can design my own pattern, the
better. Women shouldn’t feel there are
right answers and they’re getting it
wrong. There is no right answer.”
DATING
says Angela Lain,
Commissioning Editor
for E4 “The proposition
will motivate staff.
Condensing hours can’t
work for every job, but
three-day weekends would keep staff
happy so that they’re willing to go the
extra mile. Take out superfluous
meetings, make them shorter and more
succinct and then reduce the number of
internal meetings and make them larger
so you can spread information faster. It’s
not necessarily about how many hours
you do but the difference you make.”
Men suffer wine anxiety
First dates are a breeding ground for anxiety. But while women may
obsess over the classic what-to-wear or spinach-in-teeth scenario,
apparently it’s the wine list that gives men clammy hands.
Despite a glass of vino being the most popular first-date drink,
96% of men don’t know their Merlot from their Malbec and shy away
from the responsibility of ordering it. According to the research, men
are intimidated by the huge selection of wines on offer in pubs and
bars so prefer to let us choose (bang goes the ‘they’re just being
considerate’ theory). If pushed, they’ll opt for a robust red, like a
Pinot Noir, which 58% of men cite as their favourite. If only they
suffered the same anxiety when it came to ownership of the remote
control, life would be much more simple.
