A London’s plush
Sanderson hotel will be
aware of the ‘secret’ lift that takes
you up to what, for today, is Stylist’s
makeshift studio. We’re here for
a photoshoot and interview with
Lauren Laverne, the quick-witted TV
and radio presenter who does bubbly
and brainy, charming her way into our
affections on programmes like BBC2’s
The Culture Show.
Um
“I haven’t been here since I
interviewed Lou Reed and I cried
all the way up in the lift,” she says
when she breezes in. “I’d read so
many interviews where he was
mean, and I thought, ‘Oh no!’ But
he was fabulous actually. He even
gave me kisses.”
As the 32-year-old makes herself
at home (“Do you like my umbrella?
It’s a little Vivienne Westwood
number…”) we can’t help thinking
that if Reed is mean, Lauren Laverne
is the antithesis. Not only is she
unapologetically chatty, she’s also
incredibly low maintenance,
neglecting to bat an eyelid when
Stylist reveals there’s little time for
hair and make-up and that, today,
we’ll be using a hair dryer as a wind
machine. Perhaps her chirpiness has
something to do with the fact she’s
just come off air from her weekday
radio show on BBC6 Music, a gig she
confesses is her all-time favourite job
(and one which she quit The Culture
Show for earlier this year).
“6 Music feels like so much fun you

shouldn’t be allowed to do it,” she
says. “Every Friday there comes
a point where one of us goes,
‘Tomorrow we’ll do this!’ and we’ll
realise we’re not on air tomorrow.”
The future of the station is currently
under review by the BBC Trust after
its legion of loyal listeners led a
protest against the broadcaster’s
plans to have it axed. “It’s a ‘you
don’t know what you’ve got til it’s
gone’ situation,’’ she explains, “but
for now, we’re just getting on
with the show.”
