Getting to
know Ellie
Goulding
Singer-songwriter Ellie Goulding,
23, talks about her love of running and
why she’s happiest on her own
Record companies are notoriously
tough and you’re only 23, how do
you hold your own?
My label is absolutely brilliant – they’ve
been great. Nothing has ever been
forced [on me] and nothing’s ever been
done that I haven’t wanted. My manager
and I make a good team and if I’m not
comfortable with something, I just say.
We’ve heard you’re really into
running. What’s the attraction?
I go into a different world when I run.
I feel like an animal, it’s purely physical.
Everything else I do means I have to
use my head and I go a little bit insane
when I write. It’s good to do something
that’s just about physical energy.
Running is a healthy obsession. You get
addicted to the endorphin release.
As someone in the public eye, do you

feel pressure over your appearance?
I prefer myself to be small. It makes it
easier when I’m running because I’m
more aerodynamic. I’m pretty toned
and I like to keep strong – I do a lot
of martial arts.
Are you happy alone or do you prefer
to be around people?
No, I love my own company; I’m a bit
of a loner. I tend to keep myself to
myself and when I’m not on tour or
with my band, I’ll be at the gym or out
running, just me. My time is precious
and I want to do things I love.
Do you dwell on criticism?
It’s a British thing to be critical. Some
reviewers actually want me to be bad
and I’ve had a couple apologise to me
saying they didn’t expect my show to
be so good. But I’m glad, it makes me
want to over deliver to prove myself.
You’re currently single. Does your
position make dating quite difficult?
Yes! I used to read stories of singers
saying I just don’t have time and was
like, ‘Yeah right,’ but I’ve realised you
genuinely can’t see someone because
of how busy it is. You can slot in the
odd hour but I’m hardly ever in London.
Are you a naturally confident person?
There are things I’m sure about and
things I’m not. Constantly I think I’ve
written a great song and then I think
it’s not great. You’re never your best,
ever, even if you think you are.
What do you least like about yourself?
I’m a hypochondriac. I’m always
thinking about death. I dream every
night about dying. I wish it would stop.
Even on the plane here I fell asleep
and dreamt that someone was about to
kill me. I’m so pessimistic and negative
but that does help because you never
get your hopes up about anything, but
I want to have a healthy streak also.
On the flip side of that, what is
happiness to you?
Happiness would be getting a farm in
Wales and living there and having lots
of animals. I was born in the country
[Ellie was born in Hereford] and I don’t
belong in London.
What are you like in an argument?
I have to say that one of my stronger
characteristics is that I’m quite
dogmatic. I’m really passionate. I
haven’t had one in ages, actually. Me
and my manager argue but he’s like
my best friend. It could be about
anything. On tour everything becomes
a lot more magnified and when you
have to perform every night, wanting
the particular bed you like on the bus
becomes important. That’s the last
thing I kicked off about. All the bands
claimed their beds before I got there!
Stylist hopes you told them to get out?
I did, yes, absolutely.

LIFECOACHHOWHEALTHYISYOURATTITUDETOEXERCISE?
Ellie talks about her love of running and seems
to have a very healthy attitude towards physical
exercise, which is actually quite uncommon.
For many, exercise is a chore – something we
dread or avoid. However, as well as changing our
body, it has a healthy effect on our wellbeing.
Change your attitude by following these steps:
SET A GOAL
You need to commit mentally to getting fit and
healthy. Work out your end goal and be specific
with your time frame. Focus on your
measurements rather than numbers on a scale.
IMAGINE THE RESULTS
Ask yourself: What will I see? What will I hear?
How will I feel when I am fit and healthy? Be
descriptive and write everything down.
DON’T ALLOW YOURSELF ANY EXCUSES
Make time to invest in yourself and your health.
Think of creative ways to fit exercise into your life.
SINGER ELLIE SAYS SHE’S
PASSIONATE IN A ROW –
ESPECIALLY IF YOU STEAL HER BED
DO IT IN THE MORNING
Studies have shown that the best time to
exercise is first thing in the morning so go to bed
30 minutes earlier, then get up 30 minutes
earlier and exercise. You really will feel great.
FIND SOMETHING YOU LOVE TO DO
Running is amazing and can be very meditative.
There are also many different classes around so
find something you love – if you enjoy doing it
you are more likely to keep at it.
