Should dads
be banned
from delivery
rooms?
Childbirth is no laughing matter.
Screaming, crying, fainting – and that’s
just the dads. With all the stress that
comes with labour, is it better to just be
surrounded by the professionals,
without a worried partner by your
bedside? This month at the Royal
College of Midwives annual
conference, leading childbirth
specialist, Michael Odent, will give
a speech discouraging men from
attending births. His argument is that
the presence of men and their anxiety
make the mother-to-be even more
nervous, resulting in a longer, more
painful labour. Two dads battle it out.

“Men are supposed to be
encouraging and weepy
in the delivery room, a
combination of sports
coach and X-Factor contestant, but
there were too many people around so
I talked about what was on the radio
(something about ants). The birth of our
children will probably be the biggest
occasion in our lives and my wife
needed me. The idea of letting her do it
without me is, frankly, ludicrous. Also,
we both know more about ants now.”

“My wife’s labour was
hideous. It lasted three
days and I was in the pub
for a lot of it, but at my
wife’s request. She didn’t want me to
see her in pain and was concerned that
the images may kill the romance in our
relationship. I was there for the actual
birth, but I deeply regret it. It was gory
and traumatic and I was a hindrance.
Seeing her in so much pain was
upsetting. I definitely won’t be there
next time – she wouldn’t let me.”
Backstage pass to
