2 Nov, Icon DVD, £15.99 Robin Wright ight
Penn is that special kind of star:
hugely famous and yet strangely
elusive, usually only cropping up
in serious, weighty films, like this
year’s State Of Play (it’s probably
best not to mention the rather
less weighty Message In A Bottle).
The Private Lives Of Pippa Lee
is another example of her ability to o
pick the roles that count. As Pippa
Lee, Penn plays a 50-year-old woman man
on the verge of a nervous breakdown, wn,
thanks to the fact she is living in a
retirement village with her philandering ering
80-year-old husband.
She has an affair with Keanu Reeves eves (who
plays her neighbour, Chris) to keep hher occupied d Even more interesting is the h ffact that h
as she slides into instability. The flashbacks to this was written and directed by Rebecca
Pippa’s childhood, in which she escapes from Miller, daughter of acclaimed playwright
her manic-depressive, junkie mother, are a little Arthur Miller who was once married to
confusing and disjointed, especially given the Marilyn Monroe. No coincidence then that
difference in the performances between Penn the ghost of Norma Jean seems to haunt
and Gossip Girl’s Blake Lively, who plays her the female leads as they lurch through drug
younger self. But the absence of any authoritative abuse, manic depression, infidelity and
voice gives the film a refreshing freedom, and it’s suicide, which makes this heartbreaking
the lack of patronising signposting that ultimately and grown-up love story all the more
remains its best quality.
thought-provoking.

BOOK
THE AGE OF ORPHANS BY
LALEH KHADIVI
Out 2 Nov, Bloomsbury, £14.99
Iranian-American Laleh Khadivi’s
debut novel follows Reza Pahlavi
from his childhood in the Kurdish
mountains, through brutal war,
love, and potential reconciliation
with his homeland. A heartwarming
and emotional read.
HOBO BY CHARLIE WINSTON
Out 26 Oct, Real World, £8.98
A No 1 smash hit in France, this
catchy and lyrical debut from
offbeat busker Charlie Winston
is like Jamiroquai crossed with
James Brown, with a spot of Leonard Cohen thrown
in too. From upbeat quirky tracks like Kick The Bucket,
to personal indie ballads like the beautiful Calling Me,
we predict great things for this album – and Charlie.

LAST CHANCE HARVEY
Out 2 Nov, Momentum Pictures,
£17.99 Yes it’s cheesier than the
Carluccio’s deli counter, but with
two of our favourite Oscar winners
(Dustin Hoffman and Emma
Thompson), some stunning London
scenery and buckets of on-screen
chemistry, this gentle comedy is
also the ultimate guilty pleasure.
