ESCAPE Routes
Enjoy a
romantic night
in historical
London
Tucked away on a busy street
in London’s Soho, Hazlitts Hotel is an
historical gem set in an area bustling
with contemporary restaurants, bars
and theatres. The hotel occupies a
group of houses built in 1718, one of
which was a boarding house formerly
inhabited by the essayist William
Hazlitt and has been restored to its
Georgian best.
There’s nothing modern about the
hotel (except for the TVs and Blu-Ray
players, which are discreetly hidden
beneath beautiful Georgian mirrors),
and as you pace the creaky corridors
you’ll find authentic libraries, snugs
and lounges tucked away between
the sensational rooms.
Each room is named after a friend
of Hazlitt’s, and Stylist stayed in the
Teresa Cornelys suite – a courtesan
who frequented the boarding house.
Covering two floors, the suite oozes
romance, with a four-poster bed,
separate love-seated sitting room
and huge bathroom complete with 18th
century bathing machine (which squirts
you with jets of water from rather
surprising angles).
Why it’s hot Most luxury hotels in
London opt for modern, contemporary
design. But Hazlitts offers something
entirely different as it’s steeped in
history and period charm.
Eating and drinking There’s no
restaurant in the hotel but there is an
honesty bar in the library and an
extensive room service menu.
Opposite the hotel is a restaurant
called Arbutus (arbutusrestaurant.co.

that is modern and minimalist, but
the food is fantastic. Boheme Kitchen
and Bar (bohemekitchen.co.uk) is on
nearby Old Compton Street and offers
English and American food in a
bustling, candlelit atmosphere.
But those wanting to continue the
relaxed ambience of the hotel should
head to Andrew Edmunds where the
restaurant is intimate, rustic and offers
a daily-changing menu (020-7437 5708).
Breakfast is served in your room,
and Stylist tucked into the creamiest,
tastiest porridge ever.
Photo opportunity The hotel is
home to your best snaps. Drape
yourself over 19th century furniture or
take a seat at the Brontë-esque desk
and study, situated in the stairwell.
