JENNIFER ANISTON
JEN LAUNCHES HER NEW
SIGNATURE SCENT, JENNIFER
ANISTON, IN HARRODS
actress of all time. And thanks
to the power of TV, the show
managed to spill over into our actual
lives, too. (I don’t believe I was the only
one spending hours quoting, “Just so
you know, it’s not that common, it doesn’t
happen to every guy and it is a big
deal!”). Consequently you felt like you
not only knew the six Friends but that
you wanted to be mates with them too.
Especially Rachel.
And six years after her final scene in
Central Perk, Aniston has crafted a new
niche: Queen of the Rom-com, in films
like The Break-Up, He’s Just Not That

X Choose a colour

On the red carpet
you’ll see Jen in nudes,
metallics or black,
which all suit her
sun-kissed skin.
X Know your shape
Jen’s lithe physique
and toned arms means
she chooses strapless
bandeau dresses, low
backs and slashed-tothe-thigh
styles. Maxis

off-duty, Jen loves her
basics and is often in a
staple uniform of vests
and bootcut jeans
(favouring US labels
C&C and Paige) and
always smartens
it up with a blazer.
X Go for minimal
accessories Jen
prefers to carry
modest totes from
designers such as
Bottega Veneta and
Salvatore Ferragamo.
Her shoe choice is
often simple sandals
from Jimmy Choo.

special enough to be unattainable but
real enough that you can imagine
chatting to her over coffee.
But when the chance comes to
interview Jen for the release of her
first fragrance – Jennifer Aniston – I’m
allotted all of 10 minutes. Cue a mild
panic. How, exactly, do you manage to
strike up a rapport with someone in
10 minutes, especially when you’re
likely to spend the first five staring
gormlessly at their hair?
It’s especially difficult when reams
of column inches are devoted to
speculation about her love life, her
new fad diet and her latest alleged
attempt to get pregnant. I had
no intention of going there. It’s
patronising. Instead I wanted to know
what makes Jen tick – away from
the men, the Brangelina and the
alleged yearned-for baby. So with my
precious 10 minutes, I set out to do

just that. The plan was to meet Jennifer
Aniston in a small room on the first
floor of Harrods where she’d launched
her first signature fragrance with a
public signing that morning.
I arrived to witness a flurry of
people, all dressed in black, who kept
warning me that Jen was running “a bit
behind”. But eventually through the sea
of black, dressed in her now-standard
colour palette of nude – nude Valentino
dress, nude heels – sporting an
impressive honey tan and matching
honeyed locks, Jen arrived. Verdict?
She looked fantastic. Tiny, yes, but
extremely toned and still with
a hint of a curve. She’s very pretty but
not intimidatingly so. And she laughs,
on average, every 30 seconds.
Clock ticking, I launched straight in,
complimenting her dress. “Thank you,”
smiled Jen as she tugged it down – it
was, admittedly, pretty short, but you
would wouldn’t you? “I’m sorry you’re
“I was watching Oops TV this

so rushed. It’s just crazy today.” And
she’s not kidding. A Harrods PR told
me that more people turned out for
Jen’s perfume signing than any other
celebrity, ever. And that includes
Victoria Beckham. They were also
particularly amazed by the crying.
Adults, not children. Such is the
Jennifer effect.
As Jen is in London for the next few
days I kick off by asking her what her

JENNIFER’S

STYLE IS SUBTLY

favourite city is. “Paris, definitely. I love
the people, the elegance, and the
beauty of it. I stayed years ago at a
little boutique hotel, I couldn’t tell you
the name of it now, only that it wasn’t
one of the big fancy ones. I’ve always
liked those little quaint places that
make you feel like you’re in someone’s
apartment, rather than at a hotel.”
Although she’s completely animated
and warm (with a very firm handshake)
it’s clear her schedule is a little
overwhelming. She’s just come from a
GMTV interview and will be chatting to
Vogue after me. This year alone she’s
already starred in The Bounty Hunter
with Gerard Butler, wrapped filming
Just Go With It with Adam Sandler and
straight after London she will be off
to promote her new film, The Switch
(about an unmarried 40-year-old
woman who turns to a turkey baster
in order to become pregnant – cue
endless tedious speculation about her
life). She hints that it doesn’t actually
leave much time for her own life.
“I travel a lot for work but I need to
start travelling more for myself – it’s
really important to me. You’d be
shocked at the list of places I want to
go. I want to go to India, Bali, would
love to go to Italy – I’ve never been
to Florence or to Venice. I want to
go to Thailand and Fiji. A lot of places.
The Valley [notoriously rough area of
LA]… probably not.”
FUNNY GIRL
It is reassuring to discover that, Jen is
funny. Properly funny. Throughout our
interview there are glimpses of that
famous comic timing that made
her scenes with Ross Gellar (David
Schwimmer) the funniest in the show.
Her roles post-Friends, bar 2002’s The
Good Girl (her one-and-only real
departure from girl-next-door which
raised Oscar buzz at the time), have
relied on her comedy bone, too. So what
do you have to do to make her laugh?
“Absolutely anything makes me
laugh. Especially weird things.” Like?
“The other day I got a kick out of this
sweet girl, actually, she wasn’t even a
girl, she looked like a contemporary,
who told me that her parents named
her after me. I don’t know why
I thought that was funny, probably the
fact that I’m clearly now old enough to
have people actually named after me.”
And while Friends was making us all
laugh, what shows were putting a smile
