A tale

It’s 1920 in poverty-stricken Ireland
and despite an impending war,
childhood sweethearts Ellie and
John get married without their
families’ consent and settle
into a small farm cottage.
However, as their food
supply runs low and the
bleak Irish winter attacks,
they are forced to rely on
the generosity of John’s
adopted parents.
Then, as if in answer to her
prayers, Ellie receives a letter from
an old school friend who lives in New
York, inviting her to join her as a maid
for a wealthy socialite. Meanwhile,
John goes to captain a unit in the war
against the British where he is badly
injured. Following the injury, Ellie
secretly accepts her friend’s
invitation and, against her family’s
wishes, boards a boat for America,
with the promise that she’ll return in
a year once she’s earned enough to
pay for an operation which will allow
John to walk again.
As Ellie heads to America, the
novel takes a dramatic shift, leaving
behind the bleakness of Ireland for
