ALL NIGHT LONG
France New drinking laws
seem to focus on partying
less and the lure of a nice, sober
night in. However, it seems the
opposite is the case in France.
After an online petition was launched
claiming that Paris was set to become
Europe’s ‘capital of sleep’, French
government officials quickly changed
the licensing laws so that French
revellers could party until dawn.
Clubs across France can now stay
open until 7am, a move which the
Government hopes will stop
musicians, DJs and party lovers
fleeing France for more hedonistic
destinations such as Berlin, Barcelona
and London. The move will not
only benefit those fond of a drink,
but also the numbers of drink-driving
cases across the city, as previously
youths in search of
a late-night party
would jump in their
car and drive drunk
around the
streets of
France.

Kuwait Think choosing work
outfits is a bit of headache?
It’s more serious than that in Kuwait,
where two newly elected female
members of Parliament have taken
Islamists to court in a bid to be
allowed to work without wearing the
hijab. The country’s constitutional
court finally ruled that the women in
question were not obliged to wear
Islamic dress. In France, dress
codes are swinging the other way
– women who wear burkhas and
niqabs on the street face £700 fines
– as President Sarkozy attempts to
eradicate what he sees as a symbol
of subservience that acts against
national identity. Whatever happened
to personal choice?

ICE, ICE BABY
ICELANDIC BABIES.
SHOWING PHILIP TREACY
A THING OR TWO
Iceland Icelandic babies
born in 2010 are set to be
given a warm welcome to the world,
in the form of a hand-knitted cap. The
Women’s Association in Iceland have
taken on the mammoth task of
knitting a cap for every single baby
born in 2010, and with over 5,000
births anticipated they certainly have
a huge task on their hands. The
Association has taken on the project
in a bid to highlight the great work
women across Iceland do. The lucky
first owner of a cap was a baby girl,
who was born at 12.28am on 1 January
at the Landspitali Hospital, Reykjavik.
Each baby will not only receive the
cap but a greeting card with the
name of the hard-working knitter
and the name of the Women’s
Association she belongs to.

FAIRYTALE
OF STOCKHOLM
Sweden Did you hear the
one about the Crown
Princess and the personal trainer?
Much as it sounds like something
from a Marian Keyes novel (or a
Sandra Bullock film), it’s become
reality in Stockholm, where this
summer Crown Princess Victoria will
marry Daniel Westling, her former
personal trainer. They met when she
signed up for fitness sessions at one
of his gyms, and their engagement
was announced last year. After an
extensive grooming process, it’s been
decided that the commoner is now
ready for royal life and this year
Stockholm is
exploding with
romantic spirit pirit
on their behalf. half.

THE WISDOM OF
THE ANCIENTS
Egypt New research
suggests that the heavy eye
make-up favoured by the Ancient
Egyptians helped protect against eye
disease. The make-up contained low
levels of lead and scientists from the
Louvre Museum and the French
National Centre for Scientific
Research Institute found it helped
prevent and treat eye illnesses by
promoting the action of immune cells.
Lead researcher Philippe Walter
acknowledged that the Ancient
Greeks and Romans also noted the
medicinal properties of the make-up
and he was spurred on to find out
how it worked. Utter genius!

PROTEST AGAINST
ANTI-ABORTION LAWS
50 YEARS IN JAIL
– FOR HAVING
AN ABORTION
Mexico Times are desperate
for Mexican women – the
lega legal stance on abortion has become
so confusing c that a poster campaign
has
been launched to tell them that
abo abortions are legal and have been
sinc since 2007. Influenced by the church,
how however, half of the nation’s states
have
decided to recriminalise it,
slap slapping a maximum of 50 years in
jail
for those who break the law,
mmaking it as bad as infanticide,
wwith abortions only on offer for
those who have been raped or
in cases of incest. As a result,
women have to travel interstate
to have legal abortions and
pro-choice pressure groups
are
working to free women
imp imprisoned under this law.
