very winter, experts kindly calculate
the lowest, most soul-destroying day
E of the year, taking into account six
factors: weather, debt and ability to
pay it back, time since Christmas, time since
failing our New Year’s resolutions, seasonal
motivational levels and our need to have
something to look forward to. The result? Blue
Monday, which this year falls on Monday 25
January. Cheery stuff.
But we’ve found the perfect remedy for Blue
Monday – blue sky thinking. Experts believe we
can pull ourselves out of the dark times by
thinking positively. And what better way than to
visualise yourself on a white sandy beach with
the waves lapping at your feet (and then
planning one of these trips of a lifetime).

THE ECO-LUXE HIDEAWAY
Alila Villas Hadahaa, an eco-chic paradise… the first of its kind in the Maldives
THE LOWDOWN
It takes a lot of ingenuity to create a new and
original luxury resort in the Maldives, but Alila
Villas Hadahaa has risen to the challenge.
The 50-villa resort opened last August to
great fanfare as the Maldives’ first property
to be designed and built from scratch to Green
Globe standards. Eco-chic is a huge trend for
travel in 2010, and this resort proves that you
don’t have to forego luxury to go green.
Your first sight of the island in the North
Hudvadhoo Atoll is from a speedboat as you
arrive. Alongside the shimmering white beaches
and azure waters you’ll spot the ultra-modern
aqua villas on stilts. With floor-to-ceiling
windows and private wooden decks, you’ve
got the ultimate view of the Indian Ocean.
INDULGENCES
The atoll (an island of coral) is the world’s
deepest and gets even experienced divers
excited. As the island is so small, you can snorkel
around it, swimming with manta rays, turtles and
black tip reef sharks (they’ve never killed
anyone, although they do nip).
The best time to travel here is November to
