THE FIVE-STAR ISLAND RETREAT
Kilindi, Zanzibar… your private African hideaway
THE LOWDOWN
Zanzibar is big news in the travel world this
year. With stylish eco-focused retreats
popping up all over the island through 2010,
it’s a genuine hotspot – and the perfect
destination for a bit of relaxation if you’re
woman enough to tackle Africa’s highest
mountain, Kilimanjaro. January to February
and July to October are the best times to
visit, making it a versatile destination.
Kilindi, a 15-villa resort in the north of the
island, overlooks the time-honoured Dhow
routes with Omani-style domed pavilions,
rainwater pools and cascading waterfalls. It
employs a “logically-eco” approach,
consciously looking after the environment
rather than treating its green credentials as

an after-thought. Design-wise it pays homage
to the island’s social and historical culture with
an architectural style known as Zanzibaroque.
INDULGENCES
The Spice Island is well known for its cuisine,
and Kilindi has brought a raft of London’s best
chefs to create something really special.
Richard Tewniom, formerly of Bacchus and
Fifteen, is at the helm of the restaurant, using
local fish and produce in ultra-fresh dishes.
If you’ve got a weakness for hotel design,
this is the place to indulge it. The villas are
scattered across the resort’s 52 acres, hidden
amongst the casuarina trees. Each villa looks
like a work of art with curvy shapes, high
ceilings and white walls to reflect the light.
They all come with a private tropical garden,
two private plunge pools, a waterfall, a day
bed and a huge wet room.
Seven nights at Kilindi including all meals and
house drinks, transfers and flights, cost from
£2,690 per person with Black Tomato
