Introducing the newest film
sensation of 2010
A new hard-hitting drama called
Precious starring the previously
unknown Gabourey Sidibe is set to
be this year’s Slumdog Millionaire.
A gritty yet moving film, it’s wowed
audiences in the US and looks set
to do the same here.
Based on the book Push by
Sapphire (£7.99, Minerva), the
story follows the life of Precious,
a 17-year-old illiterate black girl in
1987 Harlem who’s pregnant for
the second time after being
repeatedly abused by her father.
The cast includes Mariah Carey
and Lenny Kravitz and a production
team headed by Oprah Winfrey.
But it’s newcomer Sidibe who’s
getting all the attention. Sidibe grew
up in Harlem in a modest flat and

watched her mother struggle as
a street singer. In 2007, she was
at college and temping as a
receptionist when she decided to
cut class and audition for Precious;
24 hours later she was given the
part over 500 other girls.
Her acting experience until
then extended to school drama
productions, yet her intelligent and
daringly real performance means
we are unlikely to have heard the
last of Ms Sidibe. Since filming
finished, she’s scored a part in new
film, Yelling To The Sky and the
26-year-old is even being tipped for
an Oscar – move over, Gwyneth.
Precious is released nationwide on
